Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 1/11/09 - The Amarillo Gorillas' offensive struggles continued as the New Mexico Scorpions won their second game in as many nights at the Amarillo Civic Center Sunday afternoon, 4-1.
New Mexico put the hosts in a hole early, getting a goal just 56 seconds into the game after Craig MacDonald potted a rebound from a Mitch Stephens shot past Gorillas goaltender Mike Gorman. With a 1-0 lead in hand, the Scorpions continued to build their advantage, getting goals from Seth Leonard and Neil Trimm (the latter a power play tally) before the expiration of the first period. After 20 minutes, New Mexico had managed 21 shots on net and laid claim to a 3-0 advantage.
Amarillo fought back in the second period, getting a power play marker from John Snowden to draw within two of the Scorpions, 3-1. A.J. Bucchino, who entered the game in relief of Mike Gorman, stopped all nine New Mexico shots in the second frame to hold the score intact after two periods of play.
Despite several solid offensive chances in the third period, Amarillo could not solve Scorpions netminder Andrew Martin down the stretch. The visitors added a fourth goal-this time from Stephens-to preserve their second straight victory.
Gorman (8-12-0) received the decision in net, while Bucchino stopped 13 of 14 Scorpions shots in relief. Martin stonewalled the Gorillas with 27 saves on 28 shots as he laid claim to his third victory over Amarillo (10-23-0) this season.
