Gordon Named Royals Minor League Player of Year

WICHITA, Kan. - Kansas City Royals Director of Player Development J.J. Picollo announced today that Wichita Wranglers third baseman, Alex Gordon, has been named the Alex George Royals Minor League Player of the Year for 2006.

Gordon was named Royals Minor League Player of the Year after turning in one of the finest seasons in all the minor leagues, as he hit .325 with 39 doubles, 19 home runs and 101 RBI. He ranked second among all minor leaguers with 286 total bases and fourth in runs scored at 111. Gordon ranked tied for fourth in slugging percentage (.588), while finishing tied for eighth with 29 home runs. Gordon was named the Texas League Player of the Year and was one of five players in the U.S. minor league system to record at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases.

The Royals also named Gordon the player of the year from Double-A Wichita. Zack Greinke was named the pitcher of the year at Wichita.

Greinke finished the regular season 8-3 with a 4.34 ERA in 18 games for Wichita. Greinke was 8-2 with a 3.69 ERA as a starter. Greinke finished the season going 4-1 over his final 7 starts with a 2.44 ERA. Greinke won the Royals Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award in 2003.
