MISSOULA, MONT . - Former Osprey slugger Paul Goldschmidt (2009) won the fan vote at first base and will start for the National League All-Star Team July 15 at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. He was the only Arizona Diamondbacks player named to the squad.
Further, Goldy is the first D-Back named a starter since outfielder Luis Gonzalez in 2001. Carlos Gonzalez, of the Colorado Rockies, was the last Osprey alum to start in an All-Star Game. He was a starting outfielder in 2013.
Goldschmidt's numbers this season affirm his role as the National League starting first baseman. He is an offensive powerhouse hitting .310 and slugging .554. Currently, Goldy has a .952 OPS. The only National Leaguers with higher numbers in that category are Troy Tulowitzki, Giancarlo Stanton and Andrew McCutchen.
The first baseman is dominating in other categories as well. He leads the National League in doubles (32), ranks third in RBI (58), and shares seventh place in home runs (16) with Evan Gattis. The former Osprey has demonstrated patience at the plate this season with 50 walks, ranking him fourth in the National League.
Joining Goldschmidt on the National league All- Star team is Osprey Hitting Coach Vince Harrison's younger brother Josh Harrison. The Pittsburgh Pirate notched a spot as a reserve outfielder. This marks his first All-Star Game selection. For the Bucs this season, Harrison is hitting .298 with 5 home runs and 25 RBI.
The Missoula Osprey return home for a seven-game homestand starting July 16. For tickets and more information, call 543-3300 or visit MissoulaOsprey.com.
