Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

No fewer than three-quarters of the Goldeyes who wore Canadian colours at the 2003 World Cup in Cuba will wear Goldeyes colours again in 2004.

Manager Hal Lanier announced today the return of two-time all-star infielder Pat Scalabrini. The fourth player signed for the coming campaign, Scalabrini is also the third Canadian under contract.

Scalabrini, 26, was equally adept last year playing at second or third. Lanier plans to keep him at just one position as well as near the top of his batting order, where he drove in 45 runs and stole 20 bases.

"I think that's pretty good when you're hitting second because you have to do a lot of things," Lanier said. "If the lead-off hitter gets on, you're sometimes asked to bunt him over or hit-and-run. If a guy gets on second with nobody out, you usually try to hit it to the right side to get him over. I think Pat did a great job on offence and defence and he was a great pick-up for us last year."

One of four players to represent the Goldeyes at the Northern League All-Star Game in Lincoln, Scalabrini batted .300 last year with four home runs and 45 RBIs. He also banged out an NL-best 28 doubles, second-most for a single season in franchise history.

The Daktronics Player of the Month for August, Scalabrini joins fellow Canucks Kris Cox and Greg Morrison as returnees. All-star outfielder Harry Berrios, signed in late January for a third season, rounds out the foursome.
