Newark Pilots News Release
The Glens Falls Golden Eagles (19-11) swept the Newark Pilots (17-14) in their two-game series at Colburn Park with a 11-10 win on Saturday night.
Once again, the long ball cost Newark a win. In the eighth, Kyle Ruchim (Northwestern) and Ricky Claudio (St. Thomas) sent back-to-back solo homeruns over the wall in right center field for the 11-9 lead.
Luke Swenson (UC Santa Barbara) hit a RBI single to left center in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to one, but Golden Eagles' reliever Neil Fryer (Siena) struck out three of the final four batters he faced to earn the win.
The Golden Eagles had jumped out to an early 6-2 lead after two innings. A five-run second inning was fueled by two Pilot errors after Shayne Herold (Ashland) retired his first two batters. Cody Lewis (San Diego) scored the first run of the inning to take the initial one-run lead. Herold didn't make it out of the inning.
Mike Kindel (Kansas State) hit a two-run double in the fourth down the left field line to extend Glens Falls' lead even further. After four, the Pilots trailed 9-4.
Newark climbed back into the game with five unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh frames. With the bases loaded, Michael Bolling (Lewis) earned three RBI's with a two-out double. Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta) drove in one of two runs in the seventh with a triple. Villa then scored the game-tying run on a base hit from Chase Brown (UT Dallas).
Kegan Banks (Blinn) was tagged with the loss after surrendering both home runs in the eighth. Ray Delvalle (Kentucky Wesleyan) had four hits while Bolling recorded four RBI's to lead the Pilots, who left 13 runners on base.
Both Claudio and Ruchim finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Golden Eagles. Their four pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts. Fryer is now 4-2 on the season.
The Newark Pilots are home again on Sunday as they play the Elmira Pioneers at 2:05 p.m. The Glens Falls Golden Eagles have the day off before the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game on Monday.
