Golden Eagles Hold Off Late Charge to Defeat Dutchmen

July 22, 2012 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Glens Falls Dragons News Release

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles defeated Albany by a score of 9-7 on Sunday night at East Field. Taylor Saucedo (Tacoma C.C.) threw six scoreless innings to get the win going to 3-3 while Andrew Furber (Gloucester County) takes the loss dropping to 2-2.

The Golden Eagles struck first in the home half of the second, loading the bases on a trio of singles by Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis), Kevin Meyers (N.E. Oklahoma A&M) and JP Rousseau (Georges- Vanier Secondary). Vigliarolo would then score on an RBI fielder's choice by Anthony Pisani (Southern Maine).

The game would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when a wild pitch, a hit by pitch and a walk all with the bases loaded would give the hosts a 4-0 lead. This signaled the end of the night for Furber, who was relieved by Steve Basile (Iona).

The first batter to greet Basile was Pasani who hit a chopper to 3rd base that was fielded by Zach Remillard (LaSalle) and thrown home, but the throw bounced just a couple feet in front of home plate and scored the fifth run of the night for the Golden Eagles.

In the sixth, Ross Kivett drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Vigliarolo. It would be followed up with back-to-back singles by Meyers and Rousseau before Pisani cleared the bases with a double to right that opened up a 9-0 lead.

Saucedo fired six shutout frames before giving way to Brandon Matthews (Yavapai) for the top of the seventh. Three consecutive walks led to an RBI single by Jon Mestas (Buffalo) and a two-run single by Nolan Gaige (UAlbany) cut the lead to 9-3. A passed ball and an RBI fielder's choice for Ryan Gasporra (Centenary) made the score 9-5 heading into the eighth inning.

After a scoreless inning for both sides, Albany made things interesting in the ninth with a pair of runs off Glens Falls closer Jared Cheek (Georgia Southern). An RBI triple from Adam Young (UC Davis) and an RBI single from Remillard accounted for the final score of 9-7.

Glens Falls captures their fifth win in a row to go to 22-17 while Albany drops to 18-20. The Golden Eagles will travel to Oneonta tomorrow at 7 P.M. while the Dutchmen returns home to host the first place Amsterdam Mohawks.
