Watertown Wizards News Release

WATERTOWN-Joe Landi's (Rhode Island) three-run home run in the top of the ninth was the difference in Watertown's (16-24) 8-6 loss to Newark (22-19). Austin McAuliffe (NJIT) got the win (3-2) while Kyle McNutt (Cal Poly Pomona) took the loss (0-1).

Both starting pitchers worked into trouble early. Brian Burns (Plattsburgh) gave up four runs in the top of the first, but calmed down after that. That was all he gave up in four innings. The Wizards scored two in the first and three in the second against Phillip Flach (Samford). The runs in the second came off a Cole Gleason (Wabash Valley C.C.) three-run shot over the left field wall. He finished 3-for-5 with four RBI's. Flach was pulled after the second.

Watertown led 6-5 in the top of the ninth when Austin Logan (UC-Davis) doubled to lead off the inning off of Kyle McNutt (Cal Poly Pomona). Chris Doyle (UC-Davis) reached on an error by the shortstop Peter Rajkovich (San Joaquin Delta). Landi came up and hit the next pitch over the right field fence.

The Wizards had the tying run at second in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't get him home. They fall to 5.5 games back of the Pilots for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Watertown heads to Elmira to take on the Pioneers Monday at 7:05 PM. Newark has the day off.
