WCL Cowlitz Black Bears

Gold Leads Black Bears to Victory

June 18, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release

Kelowna, BC, Canada: For the second time this summer, the Cowlitz Black Bears have taken a series against a West Coast League foe. Jeff Gold (University of Oregon) took the hill and threw six innings of two-run baseball. Ricky Villareal (Pepperdine) recorded the save, striking out two in the ninth. The win moves the Black Bears to 6-7 (4-7) on the young season.

Cowlitz didn't have quite the success at the plate that has been on display at times this season, but after getting one in the second a three-run third inning provided all the scoring they needed. Spencer O'Neil (University of Oregon) led the way with a two-run double which highlighted his 2-for-4 night. Kyle Garlick (University of Oregon) and Billy Flamion (Central Catholic HS) also knocked extra-base hits off of Falcons starter Ethan Miller.

The team will look for the sweep against Kelowna tomorrow at 6:05 pm. After the game the Black Bears head to Bellingham for three games before returning to Story Field on Thursday, June 23rd against the Kelowna Falcons. When the team returns, be sure to take advantage of Thirsty Thursday, where beer will be just $2. Also, Longview Fibre Ball Night-the first 400 kids 14 and younger will receive a logo baseball. Also, those with a college ID or wearing a college t-shirt or sweatshirt will get a $2 discount on general admission tickets.
