Kelowna, BC, Canada: June 17, 2011: The Cowlitz Black Bears began their second road trip of the 2011 West Coast League season by taking game one of a three game set against the Kelowna Falcons 6-5. The win was the team's first on the road this season, after a sweep at the hands of the Kitsap Blue Jackets June 7-9.
Billy Flamion (Central Catholic HS) led the way offensively for the Bears with a double, two walks, and three runs scored. Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark State) reached base all five times he came to the plate.
Ian Ekery (University of Missouri) outdueled Kelowna starter Jared Mortensen, going into the sixth inning before a hit batsman and a single forced his exit. The Falcons sent six different hurlers to the mound, and gave up a total of nine walks, helping to offset just six hits by the offense.
The team plays game two of three against Kelowna tomorrow at 6:35 pm. After the final contest Sunday, the team heads to Bellingham for three games versus the Bells before returning to Story Field on Thursday, June 23rd against the Kelowna Falcons. When the team returns, be sure to take advantage of Thirsty Thursday, where beer will be just $2. Longview Fibre will present Ball Night-the first 400 kids 14 and younger will receive a logo baseball. Also, those with a college ID or wearing a college t-shirt or sweatshirt will get a $2 discount on general admission tickets.
