Goaltender Belanger Named NLL Rookie of the Week
March 13, 2013 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The National Lacrosse League announced today that Colorado Mammoth goaltender Tye Belanger has been named the league's Rookie of the Week, his first such honor. The 22-year-old goaltender appeared in both games for Colorado last weekend and was victorious in his first career start on Saturday.
"Tye was sensational," said Mammoth head coach Bob Hamley. "Any time you can limit an opponent to six goals in this league, you deserve recognition."
The Mammoth doubled up the Bandits, 12-6, as Belanger recorded 30 saves. The night before, he stopped 15 of the 21 shots he faced in relief against the Rock.
"All the hard work I've put in over the past few months is finally paying off," said Belanger. "It just feels good to finally get the first [win] out of the way and be recognized for my efforts."
A second-round pick in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft, Belanger was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform List in late-February. He actually recorded a win against Rochester in just 2:11 of action on March 31, 2012. However, after appearing in just three games and playing only 21 minutes a season ago, Belanger is still considered a rookie in the NLL.
The Mammoth squares off against the Bandits again this Saturday, March 16 at 7pm MT on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center. Tickets to the Mammoth's St. Patrick's Day celebration this Saturday night are on sale now at the Pepsi Center, all Colorado Dick's Sporting Goods retail kiosks, online at TicketHorse.com, or by calling 303.53.HORSE.
