July 18, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
Pittsburgh, PA (July 18, 2015) -- Louisville City FC (9-3-5, 32 points) got goals from two familiar scorers to extend their winning streak to four games. Magnus Rasmussen scored his seventh goal of the season and Matt Fondy tacked on his 11th to give Lou City a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (7-8-4, 25 points) on Saturday night at Highmark Stadium.
The teams exchanged close chances in the early going before City grabbed the lead.
Rasmussen got into space and was knocked down from behind just on the edge of the penalty area giving City a free kick from a very dangerous area. Rasmussen would get to take the kick that he earned and would make it count. The midfielder placed it perfectly around the wall and past the outstretched hands of the Riverhounds keeper to give Louisville the 1-0 advantage.
Pittsburgh would level things just five minutes later. Following a foul called on Bryan Burke for putting his hands to the back of a Riverhound, Rob Vincent delivered a perfect ball that found Kevin Kerr streaking down the middle passed his marker. Kerr thumped his header into the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
Before the halftime whistle blew, Louisville City gave themselves an excellent opportunity to regain the lead. Kadeem Dacres and Bryan Burke worked a great combination down the sideline, allowing Burke to deliver a magnificent ball cross for Matt Fondy right in front of the face of the goal. Matt Fondy would get a foot to it, but lifted it over the bar.
Louisville City would come out of the locker room pushing for a go ahead goal. The visitors created a number of chances, and Fondy was denied a few times from close range before the team's leading goal scorer finally scored his 11th of the season.
The sequence started at midfield with a Juan Guzman pass to Bryan Burke. Burke and Dacres created the same combination as in the first half, this time Fondy flicked it with the outside of his left boot and into the corner of the net.
With Louisville leading 2-1 they continued to stay on the offensive and nearly doubled their advantage a few times. In the 81st minute, Scott Goodwin came to the rescue as the Hounds got behind the backline and put a shot on target. The Louisville City keeper got his hands on it to knock it down and with an open net the rebound was, again, deflected away. Pittsburgh would try a third time from a tight angle but it would go out for a goal kick. It was the best chance the hosts had to equalize.
Pittsburgh earned a couple of corners late, but Louisville would hang on to hand the Riverhounds their first home loss since April 4th, and create a little more separation between themselves and the playoff line.
Louisville City FC will return to action next Saturday at 7PM versus the Wilmington Hammerheads in Wilmington. The club will play their next home match at Louisville Slugger Field on August 5th versus FC Montreal. Fans can purchase tickets ahead of time by visiting louisvillecityfc.com/tickets.
