Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks outshine the Lights in Las Vegas as they grab three points in the final road match of the regular season.

Colorado Springs has been in form in the last few weeks, playing three matches in seven days a week ago, and clinching a playoff berth for the third straight season on Wednesday, despite being idle midweek.

As the action got started Saturday night at Cashman Field, the Switchbacks continued their on field dominance against a Lights team that has struggled in 2023. In the first half, Colorado Springs held 56.4% of the possession while rattling off seven shots, which topped the Lights who had just three chances directed towards goal.

It was Salvador native, Jairo Henriquez that got the Switchbacks on the board first, with a shot from nearly 25 yards out that beat Las Vegas keeper Leo Diaz and put Colorado Springs up by a goal in the 41st minute. The strike was the fifth goal for Henriquez and saw Jonas Fjeldberg pick up his second assist of 2023.

Las Vegas wasn't going to go down quiet, as Tyler Bagley got a goal back for the Lights just after play resumed out of half time. Colorado Springs center-back Matt Mahoney was unable to clear the centering chance, allowing Bagley to tie the game at one goal each. Maalique Foster wasn't going to allow the tie to last, as he threaded a shot from the right wing just inside the near post just nine minutes after the Las Vegas equalizer.

Colorado Springs' attack kept up the pressure as an Henriquez set piece caused Mahoney to be dragged down in the box by Vegas' Jacob Bushue, earning a penalty kick for Romario Williams and the Switchbacks. Williams planted the shot inside the left post out of Diaz's reach, and put the Switchbacks up a pair, tying his career best with his 15th goal of the season.

Fifteen minutes later in the 77th minute, Las Vegas would tally another strike as Lights captain Lucas Stauffer shook the defense with a quick turnaround move inside the box and finished past Herrera. The Lights push would be too little too late, as the Switchbacks leave Cashman Field with three points.

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks return home to finish out the regular season schedule, as Phoenix Rising is set to visit Weidner Field next Saturday with fifth place in the west on the line.
