OCSC Clinches Home Playoff Game with Win Over San Antonio FC

October 7, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Orange County SC News Release

Orange County SC defeated San Antonio FC in a gritty 1-0 on Saturday, October 7 at Championship Stadium in Irvine, CA behind a lone goal in the 44th minute from forward Milan Iloski. Iloski's 15th of the year secured a home playoff game for OCSC for the second time in three years.

Orange County SC threatened first in the 10th minute as Iloski drew a free kick outside the box. His brother, midfielder Brian Iloski took the ensuing free kick driving in a ball towards defender Dillon Powers. Powers connected with a header to Milan who hit one towards goal, but it was saved by San Antonio goalkeeper Nick Marsman.

The Black and Orange continued on the attacking front in the 18th minute when Milan made a nifty move in between the legs of the defender, dishing it to midfielder Kyle Scott. Scott dumped it off to defender Ryan Doghman who fired a shot that was blocked by the defense but the rebound found its way to midfielder Kevin Partida on the right side of the box. Partida's shot was on target, however, it was deflected away by a last second stand from San Antonio midfielder Mohammed Abu.

Brian Iloski curved one towards his brother in the 31st minute outside the left side of the box as OCSC continued to attack. Milan tapped it to himself and calmly curved in a shot with his right foot towards the left goalpost, but his shot went just wide of the goal.

OCSC finally prevailed in the 44th minute as Scott played it into Milan Iloski just outside the box. Milan worked his way past the defender and slid in a shot from the left side of the box, curving the ball into the bottom left corner of the net past the San Antonio goalkeeper to put OCSC up 1-0, sending the home fans into a frenzy of cheers.

San Antonio had their first real chance of the night right before halftime as midfielder Jorge Hernández found midfielder Santiago Patiño. Patiño fired one from 35 yards out that was saved by OCSC goalkeeper Colin Shutler in the top center of the goal and OCSC held a lead going into halftime.

Things got chippy coming out of the break in the 55th minute as OCSC forward Marc "Sparky" McNulty got into it with San Antonio captain Mitch Taintor. Sparky took a shot from Taintor and retaliated, earning himself a red card and automatic ejection, leaving OCSC with 10 men for the remainder of the match.

San Antonio tried to answer in the 72nd minute as they earned themselves a corner kick. On the corner, Hernández sent in a ball towards substitute midfielder Juan Azócar who connected with a header in the center of the box that just sailed over the crossbar.

San Antonio put the pressure on again in the 78th minute as midfielder Nathan Fogaca found forward Tani Oluwaseyi inside the box. OCSC goalkeeper Colin Shutler made a huge play making a diving clearance with both hands in the box, saving what could have been a San Antonio goal.

San Antonio had a few shots in stoppage time but none as important as in the eighth minute of added time as they got dangerously close to a goal. The ball was played ahead to Oluwaseyi following an OCSC goal kick. Shutler came out to deflect the ball, but shanked it off his right foot to the left side of the box.

Oluwaseyi chipped it towards goal, and OCSC substitute defender Andrew Fox headed it off the crossbar to prevent the goal. Shutler punched it away, although the danger wasn't clear yet. The ball found its way to Fogaca. Focaga fired with the right foot from outside the box, and it was saved by Shutler.
