Gnats Bats Get Going Late in 6-2 Win

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats scored five runs in their final two turns at bat Tuesday night to upend the Asheville Tourists 6-2 and move back into a first place tie with the Greenville Drive. The Gnats and Drive own identical 35-30 records with five games to play in the first half. The first half champion earns the top seed in the SAL playoffs.

The Gnats are now 10-2 at home at Historic Grayson Stadium since May 25.

With the game tied 2-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth inning, Savannah scored four runs against the Asheville bullpen. First baseman Jon Leroux drew a bases loaded walk to force home the go-ahead run. DH Tomas Nido and second baseman JC Rodriguez followed with RBI singles to give the Gnats some breathing room before catcher Tyler Moore's sacrifice fly completed the inning's scoring.

The Gnats tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Nido drove a single into left field to score right fielder Wuilmer Becerra.

Savannah starter Casey Delgado was excellent, and began with four perfect innings. The Tourists (29-36) got to Delgado for two runs in the fifth on four clean singles. Delgado gave the Gnats 7.2 innings with 10 strikeouts and no walks. However, because reliever Jimmy Duff pitched the final out of the eighth, he vultured the win, his second of 2015.

Nido finished with a pair of RBI singles, and shortstop Luis Guillorme was 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.

The Sand Gnats and Asheville Tourist will continue their three-game series on Wednesday at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats will start RHP Martires Arias (3-3, 3.29), while Asheville will trot RHP Ryan Castellani (0-4, 3.12) to the mound. Castellani has made two starts against Savannah with a record of 0-1 and a 2.45 ERA. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM and gates will open at 6 PM.
