Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Outfielder Michael Hernandez will join the Sand Gnats from the St. Lucie Mets, and Brandon Kawal will re-join Extended Spring Training, the New York Mets announced today. Right-hander Jacobo Neguilis was placed on the disabled list.
Hernandez, 24, joins the Sand Gnats after beginning the season with High-A St. Lucie. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native hit .160 in 25 at-bats for the St. Lucie Mets. Last season, Hernandez played in the Detroit Tigers organization with the Lakeland Flying Tigers (High-A) and hit 20 home runs in 116 games. The Mets signed the outfielder after he was released by the Texas Rangers in February.
The 24-year-old Neguilis was placed on the disabled with a right biceps strain to become the fifth Sand Gnat to land on the DL this season. In six appearances with the Sand Gnats, Neguilis had an 0-1 record and a 6.43 ERA.
Kawal, 23, went 3-for-12 in three games with the Sand Gnats. The Los Angeles native played college baseball at Concordia (Calif.) University. The outfielder was drafted in the 38th round of the 2007 amateur draft. Kawal was placed on the Brooklyn roster and will re-join Extended Spring Training.
The Sand Gnats continue a 10-game homestand tonight at 7 p.m. against the Rome Braves. Right-hander Maikel Cleto (0-0, 3.60) gets the nod for Savannah while lefty Jeffrey Locke (0-2, 7.50) takes the hill for the Braves. Tonight is Fireworks Friday, with postgame fireworks to follow the game courtesy of KIX 96. For tickets and more information call 912-351-9150 or visit www.sandgnats.com
