Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Sometimes the numbers don't add up. That was certainly the case on Friday night for Delmarva, as the Shorebirds out-hit West Virginia 13-8, but fell 5-2, snapping their two game winning streak and evening the four-game series at one game apiece.
Zelous Wheeler's two-out two-run home run in the sixth inning turned a 2-1 Power deficit into a 3-2 edge, and West Virginia would add two more in the seventh on Lee Haydel's two-run single, giving the home team more than enough insurance for their bullpen, which combined for three and one third scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. Reliever Jose Garcia earned his first win out of the year for the Power, tossing an inning and a third for West Virginia.
Cole McCurry allowed just one run through the first five innings and recorded the first two outs in the sixth before Wheeler launched a towering shot to right field, diminishing McCurry's chances for a victory. In six and a third, McCurry allowed five, runs, four earned, on eight hits, while striking out four and not walking anyone. Cliff Flagello pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief for Delmarva.
All nine Delmarva starters recorded a hit in the game, but RBI's were hard to come by. Tyler Henson was 3-4 leading the Shorebirds, but Delmarva stranded 12 runners in the game, by far the most telling statistic of the evening.
