Glime's Double Lifts Jupiter to 3-2 Win Over Dunedin

Gregg Glime's third hit of the season lifted Chad James to his third straight win, a 3-2 victory over Dunedin to even the series at a game apiece.

The game matched two of the best pitchers in the Florida State League, with James facing one of just ten pitchers with a lower ERA than his 3.40. Dunedin's Nestor Molina entered the game with a 2.51 mark, the second-lowest in the league.

The two looked like they would battle to a no-decision, with Molina giving up a two-run homer to Jeff Dominguez in the 1st and James seeing lead-off hits in the 3rd and 5th innings come around to score.

That's when Jupiter's unlikeliest hero to date used the bottom of the 6th to take the lead before James officially left the game. J.L. Ortiz led off the frame with his third hit of the night, only to be erased on Sergio Pedroza's bunt. After a pop-up for the second out, the Hammerheads looked like they might waste a lead-off for the third time, as #9 hitter Gregg Glime stepped to the plate.

Known for his ability behind the plate, Glime hasn't done much with the bat this year. After getting one hit in six games filling in at Triple-A New Orleans, the catcher entered the game batting .095 for Jupiter. Glime had already struck out twice to end the 2nd and 4th innings, both times stranding runners in scoring position.

Glime put all of that behind him with one swing, crushing a double off the wall in center field to score Pedroza, putting Jupiter ahead 3-2 and making James the pitcher of record.

After being plagued by a lack of support during his 0-13 start, James got his third win in as many games with the help of a Hammerheads offense that saw every member of the lineup reach base, highlighted by Ortiz's three hits and some 1st inning fireworks.

Rehabbing a knee injury, Marlins' center fielder Chris Coghlan led off the game with the first of his two base hits. He didn't have to worry about hustling around the bases, as Jeff Dominguez launched his first home run since May 6th to give Jupiter an early 2-0 lead.

That allowed James some breathing room on a night in which he wasn't as sharp as in his previous two outings. The left-hander scattered seven hits, including three doubles, along with a trio of walks in his six innings of work. He was helped by five strikeouts, as well as a Hammerhead defense that got four outs on a pair of unusual plays.

After a one-out double by Jon Talley in the 4th, Dunedin's Kevin Nolan lined a ball at the shortstop Dominguez, who threw to second to try and double the runner. Jose Torres missed the ball, but Talley turned to advance to third without tagging the bag. Center fielder Jose Duarte raced to the ball and threw in to Torres, who caught it this time to end the inning.

Talley was caught on the base paths to end the inning again in the 6th, this time after putting the ball in play. As Talley had done earlier, Brian Van Kirk knocked a one-out double in that frame as well. Van Kirk tried to advance on Talley's chopping ground ball, but was caught in a pickle when Dominguez went to third base with the throw. After the rundown to erase Van Kirk, Dominguez caught Talley trying to advance to second, starting another rundown on the left side of the infield.

After Glime's heroics kept James in line for the win, it was up the Jupiter bullpen to preserve it. Wade Korpi tossed a 1-2-3 7th inning, but it was All-Star closer A.J. Ramos who came on to start the 8th. Ramos, who hadn't been called on to go more than four outs all season, struck out four batters in the final two frames for his 18th save of the season.

Down four games to two, the Hammerheads need to take the final two games in order to salvage a tie of the season series with the Blue Jays. They'll send Edgar Olmos to the mound to face Andrew Liebel, making his first start for Dunedin this year, in a 6:35 p.m. start at Roger Dean Stadium on Wednesday night.
