Cardinals Hit Five Home Runs in 10-3 Win

LAKELAND, Fla. -Just one night after getting shutout 1-0, the Palm Beach Cardinals (17-16, 46-56) hit a season-high five home runs and got six solid innings from Carlos Martinez to defeat the Lakeland Flying Tigers (13-17, 49-51) by a final of 10-3 Tuesday night in game two of a four-game series at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Martinez (2-1, 4.44 ERA) bounced back from a very rough prior outing with six strong innings against the Flying Tigers, allowing just a run on two hits and three walks while striking out six. The 19-year-old righty, rated as the third-best prospect in the Cardinals organization, gave up four runs in just 1.2 innings in his last start at home but is now 4-3 with a 3.47 ERA in 13 combined games in the 2011 season (his first in the U.S.). Martinez was promoted from Class-A Quad Cities June 29.

The Cardinals got off to a hot start after being held to just five hits Monday night, striking for three runs in the top of the first inning. Domnit Bolivar drew a one-out walk in advance of Kyle Conley, who drove his eighth homer of the season over the wall in left before Xavier Scruggsfollowed one out later with his team-high 10 th longball to right. Conley, a 7th round pick back in 2009, has now homered in four of the last five games and driven in seven during the stretch.

Lakeland got a run in the bottom of the first on a leadoff walk and subsequent RBI-triple from Daniel Fields before Palm Beach added two more in the third. Rainel Rosario hit his first dinger of the contest with two outs to keep the inning alive for Scruggs, who drew a walk, eventually moved to third on another walk and a single and came home to score on a passed ball to give Palm Beach a 5-1 lead.

The Cardinals continued to hit and walk themselves into scoring opportunities but were unable to strike again until the eighth, when Robert Stock began the rally with a leadoff double to right. Ted Obregonfollowed with a single to put two on for Starlin Rodriguez's second homer of the year, with both coming in the past four games.

Conley singled after a Bolivar strikeout to set up another mammoth shot from Rosario, this time a two-run blast to left, that gave Palm Beach a very comfortable 10-1 lead. The latter homer was Rosario's ninth on the season and first, apart from earlier in the game, since July 9.

Right-hander Jeff Lyman replaced Martinez to begin the seventh inning and ended up allowing a pair of runs in 2.0 innings, with the damage being done on consecutive RBI-singles from Jordan Lennerton and Avisail Garcia in the eighth. Jordan Swagerty wrapped things up by striking out the side in a scoreless ninth inning.

The five home runs breaks a season-high four longballs set May 17 against the Tampa Yankees and ties a FSL-high with Clearwater and Jupiter. It was also Rosario's second multi-homer game of the season.

Left-hander Shawn Teufel (2-3, 3.89 ERA) suffered the loss for Lakeland.

Palm Beach will look to carry Tuesday night's momentum into game three of the four-game set tomorrow night at Joker Marchant Stadium. Left-hander Tyler Lyons (3-3, 4.02 ERA) will make the start for the Cardinals against righty Trevor Feeney (7-9, 3.97 ERA) for the Flying Tigers.
