
Gladiators Sign Goaltender Johnson

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that they have agreed to terms with goaltender Josh Johnson for the 2009-10 season. Johnson becomes the first player signed by Gwinnett for the Gladiators 7th season.
Johnson returns to the Gladiators after finishing his second professional season in Gwinnett. The netminder began the season with the South Carolina Stingrays but was acquired by the Gladiators for future considerations on November 13th. South Carolina subsequently took Andy Brandt to complete the trade.
Johnson appeared in 25 games this season for the Gladiators notching a 3.22 goals against average and a .888 save percentage. He finished with a 12-10-1 record for the Gladiators. Johnson led Gladiators netminders during the 2009 Kelly Cup Playoffs finishing with a 2.10 goals against average and a .944 save percentage.
The Esko, Minnesota native was also called up to the Lake Erie Monsters from January 23rd through January 29th. Johnson did not see any game action while with the Monsters in the American Hockey League.
Johnson began his professional career with South Carolina during the 2007-08 season. He appeared in 38 games with the Stingrays posting a 23-13-1 record. He also notched a 2.80 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. He played four collegiate seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth from 2003-04 to 2006-07 prior to turning pro.
Began in 1988-89 with five teams playing in four states, the Premier 'AA' Hockey League has grown into a coast-to-coast league that is the third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League. The ECHL averaged 4,174 per game last season, marking the fourth year in row and the 16th time in the last 18 years that the league has averaged over 4,000 fans. The league has drawn over four million fans each of the last five years and 11 times in the past 12 seasons.
