Gladiators Ink Schneider, Halley; Five Attend AHL Camps
September 25, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
DULUTH, Ga. - The Gwinnett Gladiators announced Wednesday the signing of forwards Stefan Schneider and Philippe Halley. In addition, five Gladiators are set to attend American Hockey League camps leading up to the 2013-14 season.
Schneider (pronounced STEF-in Sh-nye-der), 23, has appeared in 127 total AHL games over the past three seasons with the Chicago Wolves, and two teams that have since relocated in the Manitoba Moose and the Peoria Rivermen. Last season the Vernon, British Columbia native scored twice and added five assists in 32 games with the Wolves, while also skating in two games with the Rivermen and eight with the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings.
"Stefan is a big centerman with excellent range that gets around well," said Gladiators Head Coach Rick Emmett. "He will be great on the penalty kill, and seeing as he was a contracted guy and has AHL experience we are expecting a lot of leadership out of him in a big role down the middle."
Halley (Phil-leep Haul-lee), 21, wrapped up a four-year stint in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this past season, posting 78 points (40 goals, 38 assists) in just 67 games with the Victoriaville Tigres. In his four years split between the Tigres and the Gatineau Olympiques, Halley amassed 216 points (116 goals, 100 assists) and a +67 rating in 229 games. In the 47 playoff games, Halley scored 14 times, had 19 assists, and was a +22.
"Philippe is a crafty three-zone player that can find the back of the net," said Emmett. "He has decent size, but the big thing with him is his compete level and his hockey IQ. He looked good early at Portland's training camp."
Five Gladiators will open camp with American Hockey League teams: Halley with the Portland Pirates, Jeremie Malouin with the Lake Erie Monsters, Kurtis Bartliff with the Utica Comets, and Evan Bloodoff and Alex Hutchings with the Rochester Americans.
"That says that we have quality players that want to play here in Gwinnett," said Emmett. "It's a good starting point for these guys; getting a competitive skate going into the season. This will really springboard them into our camp."
Schneider and Halley push the Gladiators roster for the upcoming season to 12. The two forwards join Hutchings, Bloodoff, Malouin, Bartliff, Dirk Southern, Joey Haddad, and C.J. Lee, while Martin Lefebvre, Devon Krogh and Jonathan Narbonne currently make up the defensive core.
The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the nation's premier "AA" hockey league and are affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. All home games are played at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
Atlanta's only professional hockey franchise opens their 11th season on October 18th against division rival Greenville. For all the latest team news, contests, and more visit GwinnettGladiators.com, or "like" the Gladiators on Facebook, and follow the team on Twitter.
