Thunder to Host First Black and White Game
September 25, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release
Stockton, CA. - The Stockton Thunder (@StocktonThunder), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League, have announced that the team will play an intra-squad game that is free and open to the public on Wednesday, October 9, 2013. While this brand new event won't replace the traditional fan fest to be held later this year, it will give fans an opportunity to get excited about hockey returning to Stockton in a few short weeks. Stockton Arena will open at 6:00 p.m. with the puck set to be dropped a half-hour later.
"This game serves as an opportunity to see the guys in game situations," explains Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Rich Kromm. "A lot of times guys look good in practice and look great in drills, but once the puck is dropped in a game situation, you can really see where they shine and where their strengths are. Guys are going to be fighting for jobs and some are here trying to earn a contract, so it's going to be a very competitive game and should be exciting for the fans to watch."
In addition to the scrimmage, fans interested in exploring seating plans will have an opportunity to meet with Thunder Sales reps and select seats. Following the game, the team and the hockey staff will stage an autograph session for those in attendance. Brand new Stockton Thunder merchandise will be available, as will an opportunity to take pictures with the Bruce Taylor Trophy, which was awarded to the Thunder for winning the Western Conference last season. Thunder mascot Thor will also be in attendance to pose for pictures and say hi to attendees.
"This intra-squad game gives the fans a fun way to watch their team take the ice, and the non-game related activities provide a chance for us to thank our community for their support," says Team President Brian Sandy. "Our goal is to provide championship entertainment both on the ice and off it."
The Stockton Thunder open the regular season at home for "Opening Night", with the unveiling of the Western Conference Championship banner on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. against the Colorado Eagles at Stockton Arena.
A two time recipient of the ECHL "Award of Excellence" and defending Western Conference Champion, the Thunder led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons and drew more than 200,000 fans for the eighth consecutive season in 2012-2013. Season Tickets and Mini Plans are on sale now. For more information about tickets, merchandise, or other inquiries, contact the Stockton Thunder offices at (209) 373-1500 or visit www.StocktonThunder.com.
