
Gladiators acquire kicker Brian Gowins

Las Vegas, NV, February 25, 2004 - â The Las Vegas Gladiators have acquired kicker Brian Gowins from the Philadelphia Soul in a three way deal it was announced today by Gladiators' head coach Frank Haege. In exchange for Gowins, the Gladiators sent defensive specialist Jeroid Johnson to the Los Angeles Avengers, who in turn, traded OL/DL Mike Ulufale to the Soul.
Gowins spent the last four seasons with the Grand Rapids Rampage. The AFL Kicker of the Year in 2001 and a member of the All Rookie Team in 2000, Gowins holds the Rampage franchise record for longest field goal made (56 yards), as well as the franchise record for consecutive field goals made with nine.
He spent the first part of this season on injured reserve with the Philadelphia Soul. Gowins has also spent time with the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions. Gowins has connected on eight game-winning kicks during his four-year AFL career.
Gowins ranks as the all-time leading scorer at Northwestern and was selected to the First Team All-Big Ten by the media and second team by the coaches in 1997.
Often recognized as one of the nation's most affordable and fan-friendly sports leagues, the Arena Football League will begin its 18th season in February 2004, making it the second-longest running football league in U.S. history, trailing only the NFL. On the strength of its Mission Statement and Fans' Bill of Rights, the AFL is America's fastest growing sport. The Austin Wranglers joins the Philadelphia Soul and New Orleans VooDoo as the three expansion teams added for the 2004 season. At least two more teams will be added in each of the next two seasons. A network-TV sport, the AFL will celebrate its second season on NBC in 2004.
The Gladiators return home to the Thomas & Mack Center on Sunday, February 29 when they take on the expansion New Orleans VooDoo. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
