Philadelphia Soul News Release

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Soul announced today they have traded kicker Brian Gowins to the Las Vegas Gladiators in exchange for wide receiver/linebacker Jeriod Johnson. Johnson was subsequently traded to the Los Angeles Avengers for offensive/defensive lineman Mike Ulufale.

“It’s not often that you have the opportunity to trade for an All-Arena lineman,” said Soul head coach Michael Trigg. “So when that opportunity comes, it’s hard not to make it happen. Ken Hinsley has kicked well for us and demonstrates all of the necessary ingredients to be a kicker in the league. Giving up Brian Gowins, although tough, fills an immediate need that we have.”

Ulufale, widely regarded as one of the premier pass rushers in the Arena Football League, tied for a team high three sacks while recording 15 tackles for the Avengers in 2003.This season Ulufale has played in all three of the Avengers game but has yet to record a stat.

Named All-Arena second team in 2002 after leading the San Jose SaberCats with 4.5 sacks, Ulufale also earned AFL All-Rookie honors in 2000 when he had four sacks and two interceptions in nine games for the SaberCats.

In four season in the AFL, Ulafale had recorded 45 tackles (31 solo) including nine for a loss, 14.5 sacks, two interceptions, 27 pass break-ups, six QB hurries, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Ulufale transferred to Brigham Young University after spending two seasons at San Bernardino (Calif.) Valley College where he earned All-American honors on both offense and defense as a sophomore. After his senior season at BYU, Ulufale was selected to play in the Hula Bowl in his hometown of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Gowins has not participated in a game this season due to a hamstring injury.
