North Carolina FC News Release
CARY, N.C. - The Carolina RailHawks have released goalkeeper Brian Levey, and he will go on a month-long tour with the Chicago Sockers. Levey will be with the Sockers during their tour of Sweden and Denmark. He departed on Friday and will return to the RailHawks on July 27.
"The opportunity came up kind of fast, and right now, it's just an opportunity I can't turn down," Levey said after training with the RailHawks on Thursday. "Coach [Martin Rennie] is real supportive and thought it was best for me right now, and I agree. I'll get some games. And it's always good when you get exposed, especially in Europe."
Levey has officially been released by the RailHawks so he could be registered to play with the Sockers, per U.S. Soccer Federation guidelines. He will rejoin the RailHawks when he returns from Europe.
Levey caught the eye of the Sockers two weeks ago when they came to Cary and scrimmaged the RailHawks. Levey played in goal for Carolina during a 2-2 tie. He then joined the Sockers when they went to Charlotte and played the USL-2's Eagles to a 1-1 tie. He also played for the Sockers when they came back to Cary and played the RailHawks in a series of 30-minute scrimmages.
Levey has not made an official appearance for the RailHawks during his season and a half with the club. Last summer, he did start in goal for the RailHawks when they played Mexican giants Monterrey. Levey made eight saves and didn't allow a goal during regulation before Monterrey won 4-1 in a penalty kick shootout.
"He's been doing really well in training, but obviously Caleb [Patterson] and Eric [Reed] have been doing well as well," Rennie said. "It's a case of making sure he's getting some games and I think that it will be a very good experience for him."
