Battery heads to Montreal
July 3, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery heads to Montreal Sunday for a rare afternoon match versus the Montreal Impact (3:45 PM, Sports Radio 1450 AM / www.USLLive.com). The Battery (7-2-6, 27 points) enters the game in second place in the USL First Division. Charleston defeated Chivas USA Tuesday night in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Battery's last USL1 match was a 1-0 win versus the Puerto Rico Islanders on June 25.
Randi Patterson scored the lone goal for the Battery in the win versus Puerto Rico and avenged a pair of losses suffered in Bayoman, Puerto Rico the week prior. Patterson leads the Battery with six goals in all competitions.
The Montreal Impact (5-5-2, 17 points) lost 4-0 to the Portland Timbers in its last match played last Sunday night in Portland; Montreal enters the game in 6th position but has three games in hand on the Battery.
This will be the third and final game of the regular season between the Club's with both previous matches finishing in 0-0 ties.
Montreal is led by first year head coach Marc Dos Santos who took over from former Charleston Battery defender John Limniatis earlier this season.
Montreal last won the USL1 title in 2004 but has featured in the semifinal stage of the post-season in three out of the last four seasons.
Battery to face Houston Dynamo in Quarterfinal of Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
The Charleston Battery will face the two-time MLS champion Houston Dynamo in the Quarterfinals of the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup; the game is set for next Tuesday, July 7 at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island ($10 - $18, gates 6:30 PM, kick off 7:30 PM). The Battery advanced to the Quarterfinal round with a 3-1 win Tuesday night over Major League Soccer's Chivas USA.
The league-leading Houston Dynamo defeated the Austin Aztex (USL1) 2-0 on Wednesday night to advance to the Quarterfinals.
Charleston has played Houston in the U.S. Open Cup for the past two seasons and has advanced past the MLS outfit on both occasions. In 2007 Stephen Armstrong scored an extra-time winner for the Battery and last year Charleston survived a penalty kick shoot-out (1-1 AET) to move on.
