Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Dubuque Fighting Saints forward Zemgus Girgensons scored twice in the third period Saturday to break open a close game and send the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 5-1 road loss going into the Christmas holiday.
Girgensons' power play goal from the right wing circle at 10:30 of the third made the score 3-0. He struck again from nearly the same spot with a backhander almost four minutes later. The Saints capped the scoring in the final minute with a two-on-none breakaway, finished by Eric Freschi off a feed from Cody Bradley.
Shortly before, the Hawks had found a unique way to break up Matt Morris' shutout bid. Skating with a two-man advantage, Waterloo put five defensemen on the ice, and Ian McCoshen flipped in a shot at 17:11 off the rebound of Peter Hand's initial chance.
The lone goal in the opening period was the result of an offensive zone faceoff win by Elliot Grauer at 9:33. The puck found its way to Tyler Lundy in the high slot; he fed T.J. Moor at the side of the net, and Moor stickhandled by Jay Williams to score into an open side.
The Saints added to their lead 1:59 into the second as Moor fed the puck out of the left corner to Freschi, whose low wrister from the high slot found the net.
The Hawks return to the ice after Christmas for their first matchup of the season against the Sioux City Musketeers. The road contest is slated for 7:05 on Wednesday the 28th. The next Waterloo home game will be against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on New Years' Eve. Tickets are on sale now through waterlooblackhawks.com.
