Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Omaha, NE---Penalties and a struggling penalty kill unit was the difference in another Sioux Falls Stampede game. The Herd allowed three powerplay goals and fell to the Omaha Lancers 5-2 Saturday night in Omaha. The Lancers went 3 for 6 on the powerplay and handed the Stampede their fifth straight loss. Matt Van Voorhis and Austyn Young scored for the Herd who are now 8-13-1 on the season. Charlie Lindgren stopped 34 shots in goal for the Stampede who fell to 2-6-1 on the road.

For the first time in six games the Stampede grabbed the first goal of the game. Matt Van Voorhis got the Herd on the board with a powerplay goal at 7:56 of the period. Van Voorhis took a nice pass from Justin Selman in the high slot and blasted a shot past Omaha goaltender Alex Lyon. Joseph Lordo also assisted on the goal, the second powerplay goal for the Stampede in as many games.

Unfortunately the lead would not last as the Lancers tied the game at 15:22 when Nolan Zajac's blast from the high slot found the back of the net for a powerplay goal. The Lancers would take the lead just over two minutes later when Jonathan Liau took a pass inside the right circle from Tanner Lane and wristed it past Stampede netminder Charlie Lindgren. Omaha took that 2-1 lead into the locker room, outshooting the Herd 10 to 5 in the period.

The Lancers added to their lead just 2:46 into the second period when Liau tallied his second of the night. It remained a 3-1 game until the 18:58 mark of the second when Greg Gozzo scored on the powerplay. Gozzo's blast through the slot, beat Lindgren on the stick side. The Herd mustard just five shots on goal and trailed 4-1 heading into the final period.

The Stampede came out flying in the third period, but it would be too late. The Stampede registered 16 shots on goal in the period, but couldn't get the puck to bounce the right way. Kenny Morrison poured salt on the wound of the Stampede with yet another powerplay goal at 14:22 when his blast from the left point went into the upper right hand corner of the net. It was the third powerplay tally of the night. The Stampede would get a goal late from Austyn Young. Bryan Moore found Young open in the slot and Young slapped the puck through the legs of Lyon to make it a 5-2 game at 17:31.

Omaha outshot the Herd 39 to 26 on the night and won for the sixth time in seven games while the Stampede lost for the seventh time in eight games. The Stampede will now have a week of for the USHL Christmas break. The Herd return to action on Wednesday, December 28th in Bensenville, IL when they face the Chicago Steel at 7:30 PM.
