CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Derek Wilkinson, Head Coach and General Manager of the Charlotte Checkers, announced today that the team has agreed to terms with Nathan Gillies (GIHL-ees). The announcement of Gillies brings the Checkers roster total to eight.

Gillies, 24, will enter his first season with the Checkers and the ECHL after spending the past two seasons with the Elmira Jackals of the UHL. Gillies has also enjoyed two stints in the AHL with Binghamton (2003-04) and Bridgeport (2004-05). Gillies will get another chance in the AHL as he will attend camp with the Hartford Wolf Pack this fall. Gillies will be the second member of his family to spend time in Hartford, following his older brother, Trevor, who spent the 2004-05 season with the Wolf Pack.

"Nathan is a player that goes all out every day and is all heart," said Wilkinson. "He's a very energetic player and will help our offensive attack."

Gillies, a 5-foot-10-inch, 190-pound forward, was the 2003-04 top rookie goal scorer in the UHL with 23 goals. He finished his rookie campaign with 39 points (23g, 16a) and 122 penalty minutes through 63 games with the Jackals. He followed up his rookie season by scoring 35 points (19g, 16a) and registering 103 penalty minutes over 71 games during the 2004-05 season with the Jackals. He also recorded the first hat trick of his professional career on March 6, 2005, scoring all three goals within a six-minute stretch of the second period.

A native of Cambridge, Ontario, Gillies enjoyed an impressive collegiate career at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. from 1999-2003. He racked up 79 points (33g, 46a) and 101 penalty minutes over 117 games for the Dutchman squad.

Checkers roster to date: Phil Aucoin (F), Matt Chandler (LW), Nathan Gillies (F), Dusty Jamieson (LW), Jay Latulippe (C), Jake Ortmeyer (D), Kenton Smith (D) and Brian Teixeira (F).
