Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD- Vermont starting pitcher Glenn Gibson leads the New York-Penn League in ERA and on Friday, the Aberdeen IronBirds found out why.
Gibson (4-0) tossed six shutout innings to lower his league-leading ERA to 0.62 and Garrett Bass hit a two-run double as Vermont shutout Aberdeen 2-0 on Friday, snapping Aberdeen's four game winning streak.
Gibson won for the first time in his last three starts despite not allowing an earned run over his last 16 2/3 innings. He scattered three hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
Bass hit a two-run double in the first inning off Aberdeen starter Aubrey Miller to give the Lake Monsters an early 2-0 lead. Vermont's Mark Gildea and Bill Rinehart drew back-to-back walks, which set the stage for Bass's run-scoring double.
Miller (1-2) took the tough luck loss despite his best start of the season. Miller allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings in his fourth start of the season.
Aberdeen's Matt Angle set an IronBirds franchise record when he stole his 21st base of the season in the eighth inning. Angle broke Jarod Rine's record of 20 stolen bases set in 2003.
Game Notes- Vermont third baseman Anthony Benner had two hits and was the only starter on either team with a multi-hit game...The series concludes on Saturday when Aberdeen LHP Zach Britton (3-3) takes the mound against Vermont RHP Colton Willems (3-0).
