Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
ABERDEEN, MD --- Garrett Bass had a two-run double in the top of the first inning for the only runs of the game for the Lake Monsters, but it was enough as Glenn Gibson and Matt Perks combined on a three-hitter as Vermont shutout Aberdeen 2-0 in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Ripken Stadium.
Ironbirds starter Aubrey Miller had some control problems to start the game as he allowed a pair of one-out walks in the first before Bass lined a double down the rightfield line to score Mark Gildea and Bill Rhinehart.
That would be all the Lake Monsters would need as Gibson, the league leader in ERA, was solid over six shutout innings for his fourth quality start (at least six innings pitched with three earned runs or less allowed) in eight starts this season and lowered his ERA to 0.62 overall.
The left-hander out of Long Island was never in trouble as he did not allow more than one runner on base in any inning. He finished the night giving up three hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He has now allowed just three earned runs this season over 43.2 innings with 27 hits, eight walks and 47 strikeouts.
Perks took over for Gibson in the seventh inning and was just as effective against the Ironbird batters as he also did not allow more than one runner in an inning. The closest Aberdeen came to a run off Perks was in the eighth when Matt Angle reached on an infield error and stole second with two outs. That was the only time all game that the Ironbirds had a runner reach second base.
Lance Crancer struckout for the fourth time in the game to end that threat in the ninth and Perks picked up his second save of the season as he got Jedediah Stephen to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game, giving Vermont its league-high fifth shutout win of the season.
The victory, coming after an extra-inning loss to Aberdeen on Thursday, kept a streak alive for the Lake Monsters this season. Vermont, which is now 13-10 on the road, has not lost two straight games on the road all season through 23 games away from Centennial Field.
Anthony Benner was 2-for-3 with a double for Vermont, while Miller (1-2) allowed two runs on five hits with the two first-inning walks and six strikeouts to take the loss for Aberdeen (22-21).
Vermont (26-17) will close out the three-game series at Aberdeen on Saturday night with Colton Willems on the mound for the Lake Monsters in the 7:05 p.m. contest. Vermont then makes the long trip back to Burlington to begin a five-game homestand on Sunday against the Tri-City ValleyCats at 5:05 p.m.
NOTES: Vermont began the Friday night's action with four pitchers among the top 10 in the New York-Penn League in ERA ... Glenn Gibson (4-0) leads the league with a 0.62 ERA, while Adrian Alaniz (6-0) second at 0.92, Colton Willems (3-0) seventh at 2.36 and Hassan Pena (4-2) ninth at 2.41 ... Those four are a combined 17-2 with a 1.56 ERA (155.2 IP, 114 H, 43 R, 27 ER, 52 BB, 152 SO) for the Lake Monsters this season ... With a loss and win in the first two games of the series, Vermont will now play its 10th rubber game in its 14th three-game series of the season (Lake Monsters are 5-4 in rubber games).
