Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
Kyle Gibson took a perfect game into the sixth inning before lsaac Galloway was able to reach on a controversial infield hit to break up perfection, but Gibson continued to dominate facing the minimum of 27 batters to toss the one-hit complete game shutout over the Hammerheads, with the Miracle winning 2-0. The Twins' 2009 first round pick was masterful from start to finish, allowing only three base-runners in the game - none reaching scoring position.
After retiring 15 consecutive batters, Galloway hit a slow rolling ground ball back to the mound that Gibson couldn't grab as it hit the end of his glove - delaying its path to second-baseman Nick Romero - who made a gallant effort to barehand the ball and throw to first, but the throw was off-line and Galloway reached safely. Gibson quickly dispelled of Galloway by picking him off at first. After a walk to the next batter, Gibson induced an inning-ending double-play to end the inning.
In the seventh, after Gibson hit the lead-off batter Kevin Mattison who was the third Jupiter runner to reach base, the right-hander got Daniel Pertusati to ground into a 4-6-3 inning ending double-play to end the frame.
Gibson allowed only two balls to leave the infield, recording 14 groundouts, six strikeouts, 2 fly-outs, 2 line-outs in the infield, and the successful pick-off.
The Hammerheads dating back to Tuesday night's game, went scoreless in the last 19 innings of the series after being shutout by the Miracle behind seven scoreless innings by Bruce Pugh on Wednesday. Combined between Tuesday and Wednesday, Jupiter only managed to send one man into scoring position in the two games.
The Miracle jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After back-to-back base hits by Chris Cates and Nick Romero to start the inning, Evan Bigley would drive in Cates with a single to right-field with one out. Bigley picked up an RBI in each game of the three-game series.
Fort Myers scratched their second run of the afternoon in the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Dan Rohlfing scorched a line-drive down the third-base line for a double with Jhonathan Goncalves following with an RBI-single to put the Miracle up 2-0.
The Miracle with 10 hits on the afternoon, have had double-digit hitting efforts in three of their last four games.
