Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Cubs (8-13) took a lead into the eight inning, but the bullpen squandered a late lead as the Flying Tigers (11-9) defeated the Cubs, 4-3. Lakeland's Rawley Bishop homered in the eighth to give the Tigers the lead in the eighth inning.
For the second straight game the Cubs struck in the first inning. Leadoff batter Brett Jackson reached on an error by second baseman Carmelo Jaime. Jackson was sacrificed to second before Kyler Burke brought him in with a double to the gap in left-center.
The Flying Tigers tied it up at one in the top of the third inning. Shortstop Gustavo Nunez doubled with two outs and scored on a single from first baseman Rawley Bishop.
Daytona regained the lead on a solo home run over the left field wall by Josh Vitters. The home run is Vitters' third of the season. He leads the Cubs in that category.
Daytona Cubs starting pitcher Brooks Raley pitched five solid innings and allowed one run to go with a new career high nine strikeouts. Raley whom entered the game with a 5.84 ERA looked back to early season form. Lakeland's Charlie Furbush pitched six solid innings as well in the pitching duel.
The Daytona Cubs handed the lead to the bullpen in the sixth inning, but a three-run rally in the top of the eighth was too much. Michael Perconte worked two-plus innings and left a runner on base for teammate David Patton (1-1). The Tigers' Rawley Bishop lifted a two-run home run over the left-field fence to give the Tigers their first lead of the ballgame. Billy Nowlin then doubled in Bryan Pounds to make it 4-2 Lakeland.
The Daytona Cubs offense wouldn't back down in the ninth inning, as the Cubs got three straight singles from the bottom third of the order to bring in one run against reliever Matt Hoffman. He then managed to work out of the jam to pick up his first save of the season. Fellow reliever Eric Crichton (2-0) worked two scoreless innings to pick up the win.
The D-Cubs begin a six-game road trip starting Friday with a three-game series against the Northern Division-leading Clearwater Threshers with first pitch at 7 p.m. You can hear all the action while the Cubs are away from Daytona on AM1340 WROD.
