Erie Otters News Release
Hamilton, Ontario - For the final time until 2026, the Erie Otters would make the trip to Hamilton and the FirstOntario Centre. With the impending, temporary move of the Bulldogs to Brantford for the 2023-24 through 2025-26 seasons, Erie would hope to leave with positive memories of the downtown Hamilton arena. The Sunday afternoon meeting between Hamilton and Erie would be the second of the week, as the Bulldogs came back from a three-goal deficit to take a 4-3 victory in the shootout over Erie on Tuesday night. The game would wrap up a three cities in three days three-in-three for the Erie Otters, coming off a home victory against Peterborough on Saturday night.
An immaculate start defensively for Erie saw the team allow 0 shots on goal from Hamilton in the opening 14 minutes. Jacob Gibbons would make his first save with six minutes remaining in the frame, and only have to stop an additional three after. On the opposing side, Erie's offense would muster eight shots out of two power play opportunities, but see Matteo Drobac of Hamilton continue to shut out the Otters. 20 minutes in the books, and a scoreless affair would kick things off - Erie leading in shots 8-4.
Shutout in the opening 20, Hamilton would strike for the game's first goal after amassing a few shots in the opening two minutes of the new period; leading-scorer Nick Lardis (32) would be the goal-scorer 1:49 in. As Hamilton would compile 14 shots in the frame, Gibbons would set aside the other 13 to keep Erie within a one-goal game. Finally late in the period, Kaleb Smith (8) would snipe the glove-side corner of Drobac to knot things up at 1-1 with 15:58 gone by in the second. With shots evened up at 18-18 through 40 minutes of play, the score would reflect the same in a 1-1 game. Erie would carry 1:22 of power play time into the final frame.
The power play efforts would come to fruition just under :40 into the frame, as Carey Terrance (27) would net his 12th power play goal of the season to give Erie a 2-1 lead. It would be the Hamilton Bulldogs who would close out the game the strongest though, as the first-career multi-goal game for Noah Nelson (4,5) would give Hamilton the game-tying and game-winning goals. A desperate, game-closing six-on-four power play effort would fall just short, as Erie would fall in Hamilton 3-2. Jacob Gibbons would stop 23/26 in his second-career start.
Erie will remain on the road for their next two games, taking their final trip within the States as they head to Michigan for a battle with Flint (Wednesday) and Saginaw (Thursday). Erie will then return home to host the Flint Firebirds on Saturday night for Office Tribute Night (pres. by Printing Concepts) / St. Patrick's Celebration. Erie will welcome Kate Flannery (Meredith Palmer, The Office) for the game, with the first 1000 fans in attendance receiving a free "World's Best Hockey Fan" Coffee Mug (pres. by Printing Concepts).
