San Jose Giants News Release

The San Jose Giants rapped out 12 hits - all singles - in a 6-2 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Friday night at John Thurman Field for their fourth consecutive win. Brett Pill drove home three runs while newcomers Brock Bond and Jackson Williams combined for five hits as San Jose posted their second straight win to begin the series. With the victory, the Giants improve their overall record to 49-29.

Pill (2-for-5, 3 RBI) delivered a pair of key two-out RBI hits while Bond (3-for-5), Williams (2-for-3) and Bobby Felmy (2-for-5) also produced multiple-hit games at the plate.

Steve Edlefsen (4-3) earned the victory out of the San Jose bullpen with three effective innings of work. Edlefsen, who entered the game to begin the bottom of the fifth, surrendered one run on four hits during his stint on the mound. The right-hander walked one and struck out three.

The Giants scored twice in the top of the third inning against Modesto starter Esmil Rogers to take a 2-0 lead. Tyler Graham led off with a sharp single into right center field before Bond reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Rogers recovered to strikeout the next two hitters, Felmy and Andy D'Alessio, bringing Pill to the plate. The Giants first baseman would then come through with the big hit as he lined a single into left field to score Graham with the first run of the contest. Then when left fielder Jay Cox mishandled the ball for an error, Bond raced around third with the second run of the play.

San Jose added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning as Sharlon Schoop led off by drawing a walk before Williams reached on a bunt single. Mike McBryde followed with a sacrifice bunt, but he reached base safely when Rogers fumbled the ball for an error. Graham then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field plating Schoop for a 3-0 advantage.

Kevin Pucetas started on the mound for the Giants and limited Modesto to one run on five hits over four innings. Pucetas, who was making just his second start since returning from the Disabled List, walked none and struck out two. The right-hander was removed from the game after reaching his pitch count limit.

Pucetas began his outing with three consecutive scoreless innings before the Nuts struck for a run in the bottom of the fourth.

In the fifth, San Jose rallied with two outs to move in front by a 4-1 score. After Rogers set down the first two hitters, Boyer blooped a single into shallow left field before stealing second base. Schoop followed with a ground ball single up the middle to plate Boyer.

Facing reliever Andy Graham, the Giants extended their lead with two runs in the top of the sixth. Consecutive one-out singles from Bond and Felmy put runners on first and second. After D'Alessio struck out, a wild pitch advanced both runners up 90 feet. Then it was Pill lining a single into center field to score Bond and Felmy for a 6-1 cushion.

Edlefsen worked out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth as Modesto put runners on first and second with none out. But the Giants reliever recovered to strikeout Victor Ferrante before inducing Nick Haley to bounce into an inning-ending 3-6-3 double play. Edlefsen did surrendered a single run in the seventh, but still managed to keep the Giants comfortably in front.

Mike Musgrave (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) held the Nuts off the scoreboard over the eighth and ninth innings to seal the San Jose victory.
