San Jose Giants News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA - Chris Lofton hit a go-ahead three-RBI triple in the top of the fifth inning and the San Jose Giants never looked back in a 5-2 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Thursday evening at LoanMart Field. San Jose has won the first two games of the series and has now claimed 10 straight road victories dating back to April 20.
California League ERA leader Chris Marlowe (3-0) picked-up the win to maintain his perfect record this season after tossing the first five innings. Marlowe allowed two runs (both earned) on a pair of solo homers during his stint on the mound. The right-hander surrendered seven hits overall, walked two and struck out two. Hunter Strickland worked a hitless bottom of the ninth to earn his second save of the series and eighth save this year.
Jeff Arnold (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) and Bobby Haney (2-for-2) had two hits each for the Giants offensively.
Marlowe began his outing with three scoreless innings stranding a runner in scoring position in each of the first two frames. In the bottom of the third, Scott Wingo led off with a triple, but didn't score as the game remained at 0-0. Noel Cuevas followed the triple by striking out and then Wingo attempted to score when Darnell Sweeney flied out to left, but was thrown out at the plate by Devin Harris.
The Quakes finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth against Marlowe when Angelo Songco launched a solo home run to right.
Trailing for the first time in the series, the Giants rallied in the top of the fifth. Arnold led off by reaching on an error before Haney singled. After John Polonius flied out, Shawn Payne drew a walk to load the bases. Lofton then greeted new pitcher Ryan Acosta with a deep fly ball to straightaway center field that one-hopped the fence. Lofton raced into third on the play for a triple as all three runners scored to give San Jose a 3-1 lead.
Rancho Cucamonga got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth when Sweeney connected for a towering solo homer down the right field line. The Quakes, however, wouldn't score again for the remainder of the night.
Jose Casilla (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 SO) relieved Marlowe to begin the bottom of the sixth and kept Rancho Cucamonga off the scoreboard over the next two innings. In the sixth, Bobby Coyle singled with one out before Scott Schebler singled with two outs, but Casilla then struck out Chris O'Brien to end the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Cuevas drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third with two outs, but O'Koyea Dickson struck out swinging to keep the Giants ahead.
San Jose extended their lead to 5-2 in the top of the eighth as back-to-back one-out walks to Harris and Mac Williamson put two runners on base. Then with two outs, Arnold belted a double into the left field corner to score both Harris and Williamson for two insurance runs.
Josh Osich (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) struck out two in a scoreless bottom of the eighth pitching around a two-out single. Then in the ninth, Strickland (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO) issued a one-out walk to Wingo, but induced the next batter, Cuevas, to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Rancho Cucamonga starting pitcher James Campbell (1-3) suffered the loss after yielding three runs (two earned) on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. Campbell, who began his night with four shutout innings, walked one and struck out four.
