San Jose Giants News Release
Matt Frisbee twirled a gem on the mound, eight players in the lineup recorded at least one hit and Heath Quinn made a game-saving catch in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Giants to a 5-2 victory over the host Modesto Nuts on Friday night. The series-opening triumph was San Jose's third win in four games on the road trip and returned the club back to .500 in the second half (18-18).
Frisbee earned his team-leading seventh win of the season after tossing six scoreless innings. The right-hander worked around five hits, didn't issue a walk and struck out six during his masterful start. Rodolfo Martinez followed with two perfect innings of relief before Olbis Parra escaped in the ninth to seal the win.
The Giants jumped out early scoring twice in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Heliot Ramos started the rally with a one-out infield single before Joey Bart stepped to the plate and blasted an RBI double off the fence in deep left center. Bart would later score a second run in the inning on a Sandro Fabian two-out single.
The game then remained at 2-0 all the way until the seventh. Frisbee cruised through the majority of his start to keep the Nuts off the board. Joseph Rosa led off the bottom of the first with a double, but Frisbee came back to strikeout the next three hitters. Frisbee then worked around a pair of two-out singles in the second and a leadoff base hit in the third. The final baserunner against Frisbee was a Eugene Helder one-out single in the bottom of the fourth. Frisbee retired the final seven batters of his outing.
San Jose added to their lead in the top of the seventh thanks to two Modesto errors. Manuel Geraldo led off with a single before stealing second. With one out, Bart's grounder to second was misplayed for an error to put runners on the corners. Then with two down, Courtney Hawkins hit a ground ball to third that deflected off the glove of Helder for another error as Geraldo scored to make it 3-0.
Following Martinez's two perfect innings out of the bullpen, the Giants tacked on two key insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Three straight one-out singles from Ramos, Bart and Villar produced the first run of the inning. Bart then stole third and would score another run when he tagged up on Hawkins' foul pop up that was caught by shortstop Johnny Adams far down the left field line.
San Jose led 5-0 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but had to escape as Modesto brought the tying run to the plate. With Parra on the mound, Jarred Kelenic drew a leadoff walk before David Sheaffer singled with one out to put runners on the corners. After Sheaffer stole second and Jack Larsen struck out, Helder blooped a single into left center plating both runners to pull the Nuts to within 5-2. Ariel Sandoval was up next and he also singled bringing the tying run to the plate. Nick Thurman then hit a shallow fly ball down the left field line that saw Quinn sprint over and make a spectacular diving catch to end the game in dramatic fashion.
