San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants scored eight unanswered runs to finish the game on Wednesday night en route to a 10-4 victory over the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark. Brad Boyer and Ryan Rohlinger both connected for home runs as the Giants evened the series at a game apiece. The victory, San Jose's 10th in their last 12 games, moved the Giants back into sole possession of first place in the North Division with a 14-6 record.
Boyer (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) led a 13-hit San Jose offensive attack on Wednesday. Pablo Sandoval (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), Bobby Felmy (2-for-5, 2B, RBI) and Dom Duggan (2-for-3) also each supplied multiple-hit games.
Jesse English (3-0) was credited with the victory on the mound to remain perfect this season. English tossed six innings to begin the contest yielding four runs (all earned) on four hits. The left-hander walked three and struck out a season-high eight.
The Giants took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning with three two-out runs. Trailing 4-2, Boyer started the rally with a two-out solo home run to deep right field. For Boyer, it was his second homer of the season.
Sandoval followed with a double into the right field corner before Rohlinger drew a walk and Andy D'Alessio was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Felmy then reached on an infield single to third base plating Sandoval with the tying run. Then with Tyler LaTorre at the plate, Stockton pitcher Jason Fernandez uncorked a wild pitch to score Rohlinger for a 5-4 San Jose lead.
In the sixth, Duggan singled with one out and scored when the next hitter, Matt Downs, doubled into the left field corner. Two batters later, Sandoval delivered a clutch two-out single to plate Downs to make the score 7-4.
The Giants took firm control of the game in the top of the eighth with two more runs. Consecutive hit batsmen of Duggan and Downs started the frame. Boyer followed with a bunt single to load the bases and bring Sandoval to the plate. Sandoval promptly grounded a ball to first base, but Stockton's Chris Carter threw wildly to the plate for an error allowing both Duggan and Downs to score.
In the ninth, three singles from Sharlon Schoop, Duggan and Boyer produced San Jose's 10th and final run of the evening.
Dan Griffin earned the save out of the Giants bullpen with three scoreless innings. Griffin scattered four hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Rohlinger initially put the Giants ahead in the top of the first inning with a two-run opposite field homer to right center. The home run, Rohlinger's third of the season, gave San Jose a 2-0 lead.
Stockton though answered in the bottom of the first when Sean Doolittle hit a mammoth two-run home run to deep right center field. Then in the fourth, Darryl Lawhorn tripled home the go-ahead run before a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mike Affronti extended the Ports lead to 4-2.
English though recovered to keep Stockton off the scoreboard during the fifth and sixth innings. The southpaw retired the final five batters he faced before Griffin entered the game to begin the bottom of the seventh.
