Giants Hold Off JetHawks To Win Fourth Straight

July 22, 2019 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

The Giants extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-3 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Sunday evening at Excite Ballpark. David Villar's two-run single in the bottom of the fifth gave San Jose the lead for good before the Giants held off Lancaster late to secure the win. Sunday's triumph clinched a third straight series win for the Giants as well.

The teams traded solo homers early with the JetHawks' Taylor Snyder going deep in the top of the second before Sandro Fabian belted a fly ball over the fence down the left field line in the bottom of the frame to tie the score 1-1.

San Jose then took their first lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Heliot Ramos lined a single into right center. A passed ball then advanced Ramos to second before Joey Bart reached on an infield single to second to put runners on the corners. With Villar at the plate, Bart then stole second. Moments later, Villar lined a 2-2 pitch from Lancaster starter Lucas Gilbreath into left center field for a single. The hit easily scored both Ramos and Bart for a 3-1 Giants lead.

The top of the seventh was a key half-inning in the contest. With San Jose still ahead by two runs, Garrett Cave entered out of the Giants bullpen, but struggled mightily to throw strikes. Cave plunked Matt McLaughlin to start the inning before issuing back-to-back walks to Austin Bernard and Luke Morgan to load the bases. John Gavin was then summoned from the bullpen and the San Jose native managed to escape the seventh with the lead still intact. Matt Hearn was the first batter Gavin faced and the JetHawks leadoff man flied out to shallow center. Ryan Vilade followed with a sacrifice fly to center as McLaughlin scored to trim the Giants lead to 3-2. Following a full-count walk to Sean Bouchard that loaded the bases, Gavin needed just one pitch to retire Casey Golden on a routine fly out to center to end the inning.

San Jose then immediately got the run back in the bottom of the seventh with another clutch two-out hit. Bart walked with two outs to start the rally before Villar singled. Courtney Hawkins then stepped to the plate and lined a single into left to bring home Bart extending the lead to 4-2.

Gavin then breezed through a 1-2-3 top of the eighth with Villar making a highlight-reel diving catch at third to end the inning. In the ninth, Luis Amaya entered and allowed a single run on a two-out RBI single to Vilade as Lancaster pulled to within 4-3. However with the potential tying run at first, Amaya struck out Bouchard on three pitches to end the game.
