Giants Fall To Ports In Front Of Sellout Crowd

The Stockton Ports earned a 6-2 victory over the San Jose Giants on Thursday night in front of a sellout crowd of 6,151 fans at Municipal Stadium. It marked the second-largest crowd in San Jose Giants history and the biggest at Municipal Stadium since the 1988 season. Stockton used a pair of home runs to pick-up the victory and win two out of three games in the series.

Francisco Peguero (3-for-5, 3B, HR, RBI) set a Giants single-season record with his 13th triple of the year to lead a 13-hit offensive attack. Peguero also smacked his sixth home run of the season while Drew Biery added a solo homer.

Stockton took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as three consecutive one-out singles from Grant Green, Stephen Parker and Mike Spina produced a run. In the top of the third, Green doubled with one out before Parker stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run homer to deep left center field for a 3-0 Ports advantage.

Peguero got San Jose on the scoreboard with a solo homer in the bottom of the third inning - a blast well over the fence in left center field. The Giants then threatened in the fourth and fifth innings against Stockton starter Fabian Williamson, but failed to score in each frame. In the bottom of the fourth, Johnny Monell drew a walk before Michael Sandoval singled to put runners on first and second, however Biery bounced into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Then in the fifth, consecutive singles from Matt Klimas and James Simmons put a pair of runners on before Ehire Adrianza drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Williamson though pitched out of trouble by striking out Juan Perez to keep the Ports lead at two runs.

Spina then led off the top of the sixth with a towering home run to deep left center field increasing the lead to 4-1.

Kyle Nicholson (6-8) suffered the loss for the Giants after surrendering four runs (all earned) on six hits over six innings of work. Nicholson walked two and struck out five.

Stockton went ahead by a 5-1 margin in the top of the seventh against reliever Brian Anderson (2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) as Jermaine Mitchell drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when Parker reached on a two-out throwing error charged to the second baseman Jose Flores.

The Giants had a pair of singles in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to score against Ports reliever Scott Deal. Finally in the bottom of the eighth, Biery hammered a two-out, solo homer to left field bringing San Jose to within 5-2, but the Giants would get no closer.

Stockton added a run in the top of the ninth as Yusuf Carter drew a leadoff walk against Jason Stoffel (1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) and scored on Mitchell's one-out single. In the bottom of the inning, Peguero hit a two-out triple to the fence in deep right field setting the team record, but Paul Smyth struck out the next hitter, Adrianza, to end the game.

Williamson (2-0) earned the victory after scattering nine hits and allowing just one run over five-plus innings of work. He walked two and struck out three.

Sandoval (3-for-4), Adrianza (2-for-4) and Monell (2-for-3) also finished with multi-hit hit games for the Giants. San Jose out-hit the Ports by a 13-9 margin.

Notes: The sellout was San Jose's fourth of the 2010 season ... Peguero's 13 triples leads the California League ... Clay Timpner held the previous team record with 12 triples during the 2005 season ... Peguero finished 10-for-16 (.625) with two doubles, two triples, two home runs and six RBI's during the three-game series ... Sandoval and Monell each extended hitting streaks to seven games ... San Jose has yet to win a home series in the second half ... They've played four series' at Municipal Stadium since the All-Star break (3-10 record) ... Nicholson leads the California League with 17 home runs allowed ... Charlie Culberson missed his second consecutive game with a jammed thumb ... He is considered day-to-day ... Eric Surkamp (hip) was placed on the disabled list before the game ... Surkamp is expected to miss at least his next two starts ... Reliever Scott Nestor has returned to the team from Triple-A Fresno.

On Deck: The Giants continue their homestand on Friday evening with the opener of a three-game series against the High Desert Mavericks. First pitch at Municipal Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Ryan Verdugo (1-0, 2.61 ERA) is slated to make his first career start for San Jose while High Desert is expected to counter with Maikel Cleto (2-4, 5.73 ERA).
