San Jose Giants News Release
VISALIA, CA - San Jose's series win drought in Visalia continued following a 7-1 loss to the Rawhide on Thursday evening at Recreation Park. With the defeat, the Giants dropped two out of three in the match-up - their 20th consecutive winless series in Visalia dating back to April 2013. San Jose (48-63 overall, 14-27 second half) lost for the 12th time in their last 16 games overall.
Wander Franco (2-for-4, RBI) and Gio Brusa (2-for-4) had two hits apiece to lead the Giants offensively.
San Jose's only run of the contest came in the top of the first. Back-to-back one-out singles from Heath Quinn and Brusa put runners on the corners before Franco grounded an RBI single into right - the Giants' third straight hit - to make it 1-0.
Mac Marshall started on the mound for San Jose and saw the Rawhide push across a run in the bottom of the first to immediately tie the game. With two outs and the bases empty, Marcus Wilson singled to left. A wild pitch then advanced the runner to second before Wilson stole third. Pavin Smith followed with a double down the left field line to easily score Wilson with the tying run.
Visalia then moved in front with a single tally against Marshall in the bottom of the third. Luis Alejandro Basabe worked a leadoff walk before he was forced out at second on Mark Karaviotis' fielder's choice grounder. Karaviotis then stole second and scored the go-ahead run when Jazz Chisholm singled to center.
Trailing 2-1, the Giants threatened in the top of the fifth, but stranded the potential tying run at third. With one out, Bryce Johnson singled. Johnson then stole second with two down and moved to third when the throw from catcher Renae Martinez bounced into center. Rawhide starter Matt Bain though recovered to strikeout Brusa to end the inning and keep Visalia ahead.
The Rawhide then took control of the game with a three-run bottom of the fifth. Basabe led off with an infield single to shortstop before Karaviotis walked. Chisholm followed with a grounder to first that deflected off Brusa's glove and rolled into shallow right field. Chisholm was awarded a single on the play as Basabe scored to make it 3-1. The RBI hit knocked Marshall out of the game as Rodolfo Martinez (2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) was summoned from the bullpen. Martinez promptly retired Wilson on a pop out to second for the first out of the inning. Smith was up next and he hit a slow roller to the first base side of the mound. Martinez fielded the ball and flipped to first for the out on Smith. Karaviotis scored on the groundout for the Rawhide with Chisholm also advancing all the way to third. And when Brusa threw wildly across the diamond to third base, Chisholm was able to score a second run on the play for a 5-1 Visalia advantage.
The Rawhide extended their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth Luis Silverio led off with an infield single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Chisholm's two-out single into left center.
Down by five runs, the Giants looked to get back into the game in the top of the seventh. Sandro Fabian led off with a double down the left field line before taking third on a wild pitch. Chris Corbett and Brandon Van Horn then both struck out before consecutive walks to Johnson and Quinn loaded the bases. Brusa though also struck out to end the inning.
Visalia scored their final run of the evening in the bottom of the eighth as Ramon Hernandez led off with a double against Travis Perry (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) and later came home on a Karaviotis sacrifice fly.
Bain (1-1) earned the win in his second California League start after limiting San Jose to just one run over the first six innings. He surrendered six hits, walked one and struck out four.
Marshall (0-3) was charged with five runs (four earned) over four-plus innings to take the loss. The left-hander gave up five hits, walked three and struck out two.
