Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants 3 game winning streak came to an end, falling 5-4 to the Portland Winterhawks Monday night at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Marek Tvrdon scored two goals in a losing cause. The Giants did win the season series 3-1-0-0.
A penalty filled opening period saw the Giants kill off 5 power play opportunities for the Winterhawks and then with 13.8 seconds remaining in the frame Tyler Vanscourt scored his 11th goal of the year to give the Giants a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes.
The Winterhawks wasted little time evening the score in the second period as Troy Rutkowski beat Adam Morrison 2:02 into the period. From there Sven Bartschi went to work, scoring back to back goals to give the home side a 3-1 advantage. Marek Tvrdon cut the lead to 3-2 with just under 3 minutes remaining in the period, potting his 21st goal of the year. Immediatley following the goal, the Giants went on the power play, but it was the Winterhawks who would get the goal as Bartschi scored his third of the game on a shorthanded breakaway to give Portland a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Vancouver began the third period on a 5-on-3 man advantage and it would take a grand total of 9 seconds for them to capitalize as Tvrdon weaved his way though a crowd to score his 2nd goal of the game and 22nd of the season to put the Giants back within one goal. The Winterhawks would restore their two goal lead 7:52 into the period; this time it was Bartschi setting up Cam Reid. The Giants though would not go away, Cain Franson scored with 5:11 left in regulation to cut the lead to 5-4. Unfortunately, that is as close as they would come. Portland held on to win 5-4. Final shots were 42-39 in favour of Portland. Morrison made 37 saves in net for Vancouver.
The Giants head back to Vancouver in preparation for a home and home series vs. the Everett Silvertips, beginning Friday night at 7:30 pm at the Pacific Coliseum. The pregame show begins at 7:00 pm on AM 650.
