San Jose Giants News Release
Brad Boyer rapped out four hits and drove home three runs while Clayton Tanner won his fifth consecutive start as the San Jose Giants posted a 7-1 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Thursday night at The Epicenter. San Jose collected 15 hits in the contest and never trailed to even the series at a game apiece. With the victory, the Giants improve their second half record to 36-24 - 4 1/2 games ahead of the Modesto Nuts (31-28) for the top spot in the North Division.
Boyer (4-for-5, 3 RBI) led the San Jose offensive attack while Brock Bond (3-for-4, 2B), Brett Pill (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Bobby Felmy (3-for-5, 2B, RBI) added three hits each.
Tanner (10-7) became the fourth Giants starting pitcher to reach double figures in victories. The left-hander scattered seven hits and allowed just one run over 5 2/3 innings. Tanner, who threw 79 pitches during his start, walked two and struck out four.
San Jose broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when three consecutive one-out singles from Bond, Mike McBryde and Boyer produced a run. Then after Matt Downs drew a walk, Pill delivered an RBI single to give the Giants a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, Bond again started a run-scoring rally as he blooped a double down the left field line. After McBryde reached on a fielding error committed by shortstop P.J. Phillips, Boyer singled home Bond with San Jose's third run of the contest. Downs followed with a sacrifice fly to right field before Pill belted an RBI double to the fence in left center. Felmy then capped the fifth-inning scoring with an RBI single to extend the San Jose lead to 6-0.
The Giants plated their final run of the night in the top of the sixth inning when Bond singled with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third when McBryde reached on an error and scored on Boyer's single.
Tanner began his outing with five scoreless innings, inducing double play ground outs in the third and fourth frames to help his cause. In the bottom of the sixth, Reggie Willits led off with a single before scoring on a one-out single from Efren Navarro. Hank Conger then bounced into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning to end Tanner's outing. Juan Trinidad was summoned from the bullpen and he retired Peter Bourjos on a strikeout to strand a pair of baserunners.
Trinidad (1 1/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) worked through a pair of singles to hold the Quakes off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh before Steve Edlefsen (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) fired two scoreless innings to seal the Giants victory.
Rancho Cucamonga's Sean O'Sullivan (15-7), who leads the California League in victories, suffered the loss on the mound. O'Sullivan was tagged for 10 hits and six runs (five earned) during his five innings.
