Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - For a second straight night, the Stockton Ports' offense struggled mightily at Banner Island Ballpark. The Ports dropped the finale and rubber match of their three-game series with the San Jose Giants by a final of 3-1 and with the loss, the Ports are now tied with the Giants for the final playoff spot in the North Division.
Ports starter Matt Stalcup (2-4) retired the first nine batters he faced before surrendering a leadoff double to Skyler Stromsmoe in the fourth. Christian Arroyo followed with an infield single that put runners at the corners and Daniel Carbonell drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center.
San Jose tagged Stalcup for one more run prior to his departure. With two on and one out in the sixth, Angel Villalona hit an RBI single to left to make it a 2-0 Giants lead and knock Stalcup from the ballgame. Stalcup would suffer the loss, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six in 5.1 innings of work.
Giants starter Jason Forjet (5-4) gave up a one-out single to Melvin Mercedes in the first and did not allow another hit until Yairo Munoz connected on a one-out single in the sixth. Forjet earned the win after tossing six scoreless innings and allowing two hits while striking out six.
The Giants added to their lead in the eighth facing Ports reliever Sam Roberts. With two on and one out, Ryder Jones legged out an infield single to plate Carbonell and make it a 3-0 game. It was the only run allowed by Roberts in an inning of work.
Stockton's lone run came in the eighth off Giants reliever Jake Smith (SV, 12). With two outs and the bases empty, Santiago Chavez doubled down the line to snap a 0-for-36 stretch and scored on an ensuing RBI single by Tyler Marincov to make it a 3-1 game.
Smith came back out to try and finish the save in the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Michael Soto. After recording back-to-back strikeouts of Trent Gilbert and Branden Cogswell, Brett Vertigan singled to extend the ballgame for Melvin Mercedes, who struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch to end the ballgame.
Smith picked up his second save in as many games for San Jose. Corey Walter pitched a perfect ninth inning for Stockton.
The Ports embark on an eight-game road trip on Thursday, beginning with a four-game set with the Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field. Casey Meisner (0-1, 5.84 ERA) makes the start in the series opener for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Alex Balog (2-5, 3.77 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
