Giants Drop 1-0 Pitchers' Duel To Nuts
July 2, 2022 - California League (CalL)
San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to the Modesto Nuts on Friday night at Excite Ballpark. A wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning scored the only run of the contest as the Nuts edged out the Giants to win for the third in four games during the series. San Jose (44-29, 4-3 second half) was held to only three hits in defeat with none coming after the second inning.
Both pitching staffs shined on Friday with several Giants pitchers escaping potential run-scoring rallies throughout the night. Trevor McDonald made his first start of the season for San Jose after previously pitching in a piggyback long relief role and tossed three scoreless innings. McDonald worked around three singles and three walks during his outing while collecting five strikeouts. Modesto went hitless in eight at-bats with runners in scoring position against McDonald over the first three frames.
Esmerlin Vinicio relieved McDonald to begin the top of the fourth and excelled out of the bullpen with 2 2/3 scoreless innings of work. Vinicio surrendered two hits, walked one and struck out three. After tossing a 1-2-3 fourth inning, Vinicio pitched around a two-out double in the fifth. He was then lifted from the game with runners on first and second and two outs in the top of the sixth with Julio Rodriguez coming in and registering a strikeout to retire the side.
Rodriguez then struck out two in a scoreless top of the seventh as he pitched around a pair of two-out singles. Then in the eighth, Ben Madison fanned two as the Nuts left another runner in scoring position.
The Giants though were unable to generate any offense against Modesto pitching. San Jose's only three hits came over the first two innings. Carter Williams singled with two outs in the bottom of the first, but was stranded. Then in the second, Yorlis Rodriguez singled with one out before a Ronaldo Flores two-out single put runners on first and second. Nuts starter Sam Carlson though came back to retire Alexander Suarez on a fly out to left ending the inning. The Suarez plate appearance was the Giants' only at-bat of the game with a runner in scoring position.
Carlson threw four scoreless innings in his start before Chris Jefferson fired three hitless innings of work. Jorge Benitez then breezed through a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth to keep the game scoreless.
Tyler Myrick was summoned from the San Jose bullpen to begin the top of the ninth and the right-hander would run into trouble as the Nuts pushed across the only run of the game. With one out, Edwin Arroyo lined a single into right. Then with Harry Ford at the plate, Myrick made a wild pick-off throw to first allowing Arroyo to advance all the way to third. It was the Giants' only error of the evening. After Ford walked to put runners on the corners, Myrick uncorked a wild pitch with Robert Perez Jr. at the plate allowing Arroyo to score for a 1-0 Modesto lead.
The Giants would manage only two baserunners after the second inning. Grant McCray walked to leadoff the bottom of the fifth, but was promptly erased when the next batter, Aeverson Arteaga, grounded into a double play. In the bottom of the ninth, Arteaga reached safely on a one-out error to snap a streak of nine straight San Jose batters retired. Benitez though came back to strikeout Williams and then retired Riley Mahan on a groundout to end the game.
