Giants Collect 17 Hits In 6-2 Win At Visalia

Brad Boyer hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning and the San Jose Giants pounded out 17 hits in a 6-2 victory over the Visalia Oaks on Tuesday night at Recreation Park. Four San Jose players recorded three-hit games while Daryl Maday earned the win on the mound with six effective innings of work. The Giants claimed two-of-three games in the series and improved their second half record to 35-23 - 5 1/2 games ahead of the Modesto Nuts (29-28) for the top spot in the North Division.

Matt Downs (3-for-5, 2 2B) supplied his second consecutive three-hit game while Sharlon Schoop (3-for-4, HR, RBI) added his seventh home run of the season. Brett Pill (3-for-5, 2B, RBI) and Darren Ford (3-for-3, SB) also contributed three-hit performances at the plate.

Maday (2-0) won his second straight start since joining the Giants from Connecticut (AA). The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. Maday, who threw 89 pitches, walked two and struck out five.

With San Jose trailing by a 2-1 margin, Mike McBryde led off the top of the third inning with a line drive single into center field. With one out, McBryde advanced to second base on a wild pick-off throw from pitcher Wes Roemer before taking third on Pill's ground out. Bobby Felmy then stepped to the plate and lined a single into right field to easily score McBryde with the tying run.

In the top of the fourth, Schoop singled with one out before advancing to third base when Ford grounded a single through the right side of the infield on a perfectly executed hit-and-run play. Boyer followed by crushing a 1-0 pitch from Roemer over the fence in deep left center field for a three-run homer. The home run, Boyer's sixth of the year, gave the Giants a 5-2 lead.

Schoop scored San Jose's final run of the contest when he connected for a solo blast in the top of the eighth inning.

Boyer (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, SB) also finished with a multiple-hit game for the Giants. The 17 hits was just one off of San Jose's season-high.

Maday allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning as Visalia built a slim lead. With one out, Greg Thomson singled before Ed Easley reached on a fielding error committed by Schoop at shortstop. Mike Mee followed with a line drive single into right field to score Thomson and advance Easley to third base. Steve Mena then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field plating Easley giving the Oaks a 2-1 advantage.

Maday worked through a pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the third inning to keep Visalia off the scoreboard. The Oaks put one runner on base with two outs in each of the fifth and sixth frames, but Maday both times did not allow a run.

Joe Paterson (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) relieved Maday to begin the bottom of the seventh and held Visalia scoreless over a pair of innings. In the seventh, Pedro Ciriaco singled with two outs before Pete Clifford drew a walk. Ricardo Sosa was up next representing the potential tying run, but Paterson induced the Oaks top home run hitter to line out to left field ending the threat.

Paterson then worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth before Dan Otero (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) fired a perfect final inning to seal the Giants victory.

San Jose initially jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the first inning when Pill delivered a two-out, RBI double off the fence in deep left center field.

Roemer (7-11) suffered the loss for the Oaks after he was tagged for 12 hits and five runs (four earned) over five innings. Roemer, who has allowed a league-high 22 home runs, struck out five and walked none.

Notes: The Giants have now won eight consecutive series' ... Their last series loss was when Bakersfield took two-of-three games from July 22-24 at Municipal Stadium ... Boyer has homered four times in his last 10 games ... Downs is sixth in the California League with a .315 batting average ... Ford stole his 59th base of the year ... San Jose finished the season with a 16-11 record against Visalia (10-4 at Recreation Park) ... The Giants out-hit the Oaks by a 17-7 margin ... Pill extended his hitting streak to seven games with his first-inning double ... San Jose improved their overall record to 78-50 - a season-high 28 games over .500.

On Deck: The Giants continue their road trip on Wednesday evening with the opener of a three-game series against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. First pitch at The Epicenter is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. Jesse English (12-6, 3.18 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Rancho Cucamonga is expected to counter with Michael Anton (5-5, 5.79 ERA).
