Giants blast four home runs in 11-6 victory over Stockton

The San Jose Giants hit four home runs in an 11-6 victory over the Stockton Ports on Sunday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. The Giants scored four runs in both the sixth and eighth innings en route to the win - their second in three games this weekend against Stockton. With the victory, the Giants guaranteed the season-series win over the Ports. San Jose will finish the 2005 regular season with a winning record against every team in the California League.

Trailing 4-3, the decisive inning for the Giants came in the top of the sixth. With one out, Todd Jennings started the rally by reaching base safely on a strike three, wild pitch. Eddy Martinez-Esteve then stepped to the plate and lined a double to deep right center field putting a pair of runners in scoring position. John Bowker was up next and the San Jose right fielder grounded a ball to first base. Matt Allegra fielded the grounder and fired to third base in an attempt to retire Jennings. After a brief run-down, Ports third baseman John McCurdy uncorked a wild throw to home plate allowing Jennings and Martinez-Esteve to score the tying and go-ahead runs respectively. Bowker reached second base on the fielder's choice.

Travis Ishikawa followed the fielding mishap with a line drive home run to right field pushing San Jose in front by a 7-4 score. For Ishikawa, it was his team-leading 21st home run of the season.

The Ports cut into the Giants lead in the bottom of the sixth when Dustin Majewski launched a two-run home run to right center field. The score remained 7-6 until San Jose took control of the contest with four more runs in the top of the eighth inning.

With one out, Bowker lifted a high, towering drive down the right field line and over the fence for a solo home run. It was Bowker's fourth home run in his last five games. Ishikawa restarted the rally with a single which was followed by a walk to Guillermo Rodriguez. Jake Wald then doubled home both runners before Pat Dobson's two-out single plated the final Giants run of the evening.

Geno Espineli fired 1 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Giants late in the game. Espineli though would leave the contest in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and one out. With San Jose holding onto a five-run lead, Joe Bateman came into pitch and retired Kurt Suzuki on a soft line drive to first base and Danny Putnam on a ground out to set down the Ports. Bateman then struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory.

The Giants smacked a pair of solo home runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Dobson led off the ballgame with a blast to left center field. With two outs, Martinez-Esteve crushed a home run extending the lead to 2-0. San Jose added a run in the top of the third when Jennings drove home Dobson with a one-out single.

Juan Serrato (1 2/3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) was credited with the victory out of the bullpen for the Giants. Starting pitcher Ryan Sadowski allowed four runs on four hits in four innings of work. The right-hander walked four and struck out three.

Multi-hit games for San Jose came from Dobson (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI), Jennings (2-for-5, RBI), Martinez-Esteve (2-for-5, 2B, HR, RBI), Ishikawa (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI), and Anthony Contreras (2-for-4, 2B). The Giants out-hit the Ports by a 13-11 margin.
