Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
For the second straight night the Idaho Falls Chukars bats were held at bay by the Casper Ghosts pitchers, leading to a 4-2 loss in front of 2,842 fans at Melaleuca Field.
The Ghosts pitching staff held the Chukars to just seven hits, six singles in the loss, a night after limiting the Idaho Falls bats to just eight hits and two runs. The Casper staff entered the series with a Pioneer League worst ERA of 6.67.
The lead force for the Ghosts was starting pitcher Danny Winkler, who held the Chukars to just one run on three hits over his six innings pitched, walking one and striking out five. Casper also trotted out three relievers in Alving Mejias, Kyle Roliard and Will Rankin who combined to shutout Idaho Falls over the final three innings on just four hits.
The Ghosts offense meanwhile struggled itself off of Chukars starter Kellen Moen, as the former Oregon Duck held Casper scoreless through the first five innings. The Chukars would actually take a 1-0 lead in the second when shortstop Michael Liberto tripled in catcher Ryan Jenkins.
The Ghosts would finally get to Moen in the sixth however, as catcher Will Swanner smacked a two-out, 2-RBI double off the left field wall to put Casper up 2-1. The Ghosts would add on two insurance runs in the ninth on a RBI single by left fielder Francisco Sosa and an RBI double from second baseman Jose Rivera to end the scoring.
Sosa would finish the night 2-4 with an RBI while shortstop Rosell Herrera went 4-4 at the dish with four singles. The Chukars were paced on offense by both Daniel Mateo and Mark Threlkeld, who each went 2-4.
Winkler (2-1) would earn the win for the Ghosts and continue his string of dominance over the Chukars, which now stands at 15 innings pitched and just one earned run allowed. Moen (2-2) would be the hard luck loser for Idaho Falls, despite having his longest outing of the season at six innings, giving up just two runs on eight hits. Rankin (1) would earn the save after retiring the final four batters of the game.
With the loss the Chukars fall to 1-2 while the Ghosts stretch their winning streak to four games and improve to 3-0 in the second half. Idaho Falls will now hit the road for a four game trip, starting Wednesday in Orem at 7:05 p.m.
