Columbus Cottonmouths News Release
Snakes forward Michael George has been named the SPHL player of the week for the week of Jan. 5-11, the league announced today.
Prior to this past weekend, George had tallied six goals in 28 games for the Snakes this season. When the weekend concluded, he had nearly doubled his goal total, picking up five goals and two assists during the Cottonmouths' three-game road trip.
On Thursday, Jan. 8, George collected three goals, one in each period, to record his first professional hat trick. His first-period goal put Columbus on the board first, he gave the Snakes a 4-3 lead in the second period, and his third-period tally proved to be the game winner as the Snakes defeated Twin City 5-4.
The Battleford, Saskatchewan native had another three-point night on Friday, picking up a goal and two assists in Columbus' 4-3 loss at Fayetteville.
The Snakes traveled to Richmond Saturday for their third road game in three nights. A powerplay goal by George at 7:09 of the second period put the Snakes up 3-1, and again proved to be the game winner as the Cottonmouths held on for a 3-2 victory over the Renegades.
After a seven-point weekend, George now has 11 goals and 16 assists in 31 games. He is second on the team in points scored with 27, trailing only Tim Green who has 33 points. George currently ranks 17th among all SPHL players in points scored this season.
George joined the Snakes for his rookie season after starting the 2008-09 season in training camp with the Amarillo Gorillas of the CHL. Prior to that, he played three seasons of junior hockey in Saskatchewan.
