Atlantic City Surf News Release

Atlantic City, N.J. - The Atlantic City Surf of the Canadian-American League have obtained righthanded relief pitcher Kyle George from the New Jersey Jackals in exchange for a player to be named later. In addition, the Surf sent righthander Monte Mansfield to Orange County (Calif.) of the Golden League for a player to be named later.

George split the 2007 season between New Jersey and Brockton of the Can-Am League. In 37 appearances for the two teams, all in relief, the Baltimore native went 2-5 with a 4.99 ERA, earning three saves. The 26-year-old also fanned 38 hitters in 49.2 innings of work. George, an LS-2, did not allow a run in two playoff appearances for the Jackals, who fell to eventual league champion Nashua in the semifinals.

The 2007 season was George's fourth in independent baseball. Chosen by Baltimore in the 43rd round of the 2003 draft out of the University of Maryland, he spent the 2003 season in the Orioles' system as a third baseman. After also playing third base for Windy City of the Frontier League in 2004, George split time as a position player and a pitcher for Elmira of the Can-Am League in 2005, before becoming a full-time pitcher for Brockton in 2006.

Mansfield, a veteran, went 6-10 in 23 games for the Surf in 2007. The native of Whittier, Calif., was second on the squad with 88 strikeouts and 19 starts on the season. Originally Houston's 16th-round choice in the 2000 draft, Mansfield reached as high as AA in the Astros' system.

The Atlantic City Surf open their 2008 Can-Am League home schedule on May 26 against the league's newest franchise, the Ottawa Rapids. Season and single-game tickets are available by calling the Surf ticket office at (609) 344-7873.
