Victoria Generals News Release
The Victoria Generals took down the East Texas Pump Jacks 5-3 on Tuesday night in a back-and-forth game to pick up their 12th win of the season.
Generals starting pitcher Daniel Tunchez, Jr. was in and out of trouble all through his five innings on the night, but got some big outs when he needed them. Tunchez allowed just two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and four walks, but did not factor into the decision.
The Pump Jacks took a 1-0 lead as Joey Armstrong hit a solo home run to lead off the second inning.
Romeo Cortina walked in the third inning, moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt by the Pump Jacks pitcher, and scored on an error by the third baseman to tie things up at 1-1.
The Pump Jacks grabbed the lead in the fifth as Zach Jones scored on a sacrifice fly by Brooks Marlow. But the Generals responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. Mac Seibert delivered a bases-loaded double that narrowly missed being a grand slam off of the left-centerfield wall to score Frank Cloutier and Cortina.
The Pump Jacks tied it up again in the sixth as Garrett McMullen scored on a RBI groundout by Devon Conley to make it 3-3. But the Generals answered back once again in the bottom of the inning as David Paiz, Jr. hit a two-run single to score Brandon Hannon and J.D. Stinnett to give the Generals a 5-3 lead.
Chase Angelle picked up the win in relief, giving up just one run in two innings with two strikeouts. Alex Klonowski recorded three straight fly outs in the eighth and Kaleb Keith picked up his third save of the season by retiring the Pump Jacks in order in the ninth.
With the win, the Generals improve to 12-5 on the season and the Pump Jacks fall to 6-10.
The two teams will meet again on Wednesday for game two of the series. It will be another Wing Stop Winning Wednesday. If the Generals win on Wednesday night, all fans will receive free admission to the Generals next Wednesday home game. Fans can also play baseball bingo for $1 per card. Game time is 7:05pm at Riverside Stadium in Victoria.
